Directed by Yvan Attal
Starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Yvan Attal, Terrence Stamp
~review by cyndi "blueburst!" wong on sept. 13, 2002

What a fun movie! Yvan Attal wrote, directed, and stars in this kick-back, low-key French film about an ordinary guy married to one of France’s biggest movie stars.

Yvan’s real life wife, Charlotte Gainsbourg, plays the subtle but striking beauty who takes the hoards of fans and constant requests for photos and autographs in stride. Yvan, on the other hand, grows increasingly jealous of his wife's increasing fame and handsome costars. He finds himself on the outside of this bizarre and foreign world that is show business, and even though he tries to make himself more of a part of her world (he goes to visit her on the set once), he just doesn’t understand (he’s a little horrified by what he finds—it’s very funny!).

This movie is pretty light and airy, but it surprisingly deals with human emotions really well. Charlotte may have the fame and influence that comes with her line of work, but Yvan doesn’t understand that’s what it is for her—work.

What makes it even more difficult is that the new movie Charlotte’s filming in London involves a handsome costar (well, supposedly handome—I thought Terrance Stamp was really old. You may recognize him from Episode I, or Young Guns, or Superman—yeah. He’s that old), whom she never would have thought twice about until Yvan’s jealousy awakened a possible attraction for him.

The only thing that weakens this movie is some subplot about Yvan’s sister and her hysterical obsession with having her soon-to-be-born son circumcised. Usually subplots will have something to do with the main story line, either parallel it's path or reinforce its message, but this one seemed a little useless.

There’s not too much to mention when it comes to the technicality of the movie, but there are some really smooth camera movements (particularly on Charlotte. There are some dialogue-free shots of her that just bring out her quiet presence. She’s lovely). Plus a great montage of Yvan’s theater exercise, which is just one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Especially if you know acting, and the ridiculous avant-garde exercise acting classes do, you’ll find this hilarious, but it’s funny even if you don’t. Definitely check this movie out: it’s cute, funny, and a good time.

Of all the women he could be married to...he's married an actress.
