~review by cyndi wong february 6, 2002

After recently re-watching the second Batman movie, Batman Returns, before I saw this one (the 3rd), I couldn't help but be disappointed. Val Kilmer is a terrible, terrible Batman and, even worse, a terrible Bruce Wayne. All the mystery and darkness that is supposed to shroud Gotham's most wanted bachelor never comes across in his performance, and he has neither the presence nor the slight vulnerability that the story relies on--he's just very bland. Tommy Lee Jones is a perfectly evil Two-Face, though the script gives him little chance to develop, and Jim Carrey definitely has fun as the Riddler, but there were times I thought he was much too over the top (props to him for all the cool cane moves, though!). Chris O'Donnell, introduced here as an older, hipper Dick Grayson than in the original story, also holds his own, but by far the most fun to watch is Nicole Kidman, who plays the psychologist that falls for both Wayne's personalities. The villains too, but Kidman especially, were just "comic book" enough to work for the film and stay true to the genre. Unfortunately, a dumb plot and unimpressive direction really bring what could have been an okay movie down. Stick with any other Batman movie (the second is my favorite, but even in the fourth installment Uma Thurman's Poison Ivy makes up for everything else); this one's just not worth it.
